Finding a Way to Do It Right
Some of life’s most cherished moments happen on a simple rug - picnics with loved ones, lazy afternoons in the sun, or quiet time with a book. But not all rugs are made to last. The bargain find starts to fray, fade, and wear too soon. The ‘waterproof’ option feels stiff and uncomfortable. These moments deserve better - something soft, durable, and made for real-life adventures with family and friends. We felt something was missing - a picnic rug designed for real life. Not just something that looked beautiful for a moment, but one made to last through years of adventures, big and small.
We wanted something different - soft yet durable, easy to carry, and thoughtfully made. But creating the perfect woven picnic rug wasn’t as simple as choosing a design. We tested materials, only to find most were too flimsy or too rough. We faced challenges in manufacturing, struggled to colour-match intricate patterns, and felt the weight of building a brand from the ground up - all while working full-time and raising a little one. There were moments of doubt. Was this even possible?
Then we found our answer - not in mass production, but in tradition. We looked to time-honored weaving techniques perfected over generations, focusing on craftsmanship that blended beauty with function. We set out to create a woven picnic rug that was soft yet strong, lightweight yet durable, made to withstand both grand adventures and quiet moments at home.
For us, this was never just about making rugs. It was about creating a space for connection. Every detail - from the nature-inspired designs to the eco-conscious materials - was chosen with care, ensuring each piece would last for years to come.

The Heart Behind Bilby Threads
Bilby Threads was founded by Megan & Mitchel, a husband-and-wife duo who turned their love for creativity and the outdoors into a brand that celebrates family, adventure, and sustainability.
Megan has always seen the world in colour and patterns. As a graphic designer and marketer, she spent years working with some of Australia’s biggest brands and content creators, crafting visuals that told compelling stories. Before Bilby Threads, she ran a successful accessories business, bringing bright and bold designs to Australian conventions.
But like so many small businesses, the challenges of COVID-19 forced a difficult decision - to step away. Closing that chapter was heartbreaking, but it led to something even greater: starting a family.
Motherhood changed everything.
Suddenly, the little things mattered more - the way the sun filtered through the trees on an afternoon walk, the comfort of a well-loved picnic rug spread beneath tiny hands exploring the grass, the joy of slowing down and being present. She realized that the most meaningful moments weren’t grand adventures, but the simple ones - the everyday magic of family life.
